The most indespensible tool in my kit is the combination of a Radio Shack sound meter and a Stereophile test CD. Whenever I hear an anomaly in a speaker I can easily identify it by playing the test CD's 1/3 octave test tones and measuring the level of each tone at the listening position. This must be done separately for each speaker. If there's a peak it will show up, and you can use the equalizer to attenuate it. Be sure to use the C weighting. http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/3304050_PM_EN.pdf
