I started listening to Zappa way back, probably ~'70. I still think he is/was one great, modern American composer - apart from all the other things he was so good at, funny lyrics, a studio wizard and soforth. I love his guitar playing, too. "Water Melon in Easter Hay" from "Joe's Garage, act 3" is amazing, and a bit unusual for Zappa, since it's close to beautiful in the ol'fashioned way.
