I think the thing about listening to someone express their opinions and beliefs while not wanting to express your own is a self-esteem issue. There is a fear that you will not come out on the winning end of a discussion; so you save yourself by terminating the talk before you have to comitt to anything. That way no one can pin you down on what you believe and require honest and carefully thought out answers.
If you are uncertain or not so sure of something; its better to remain quiet and not be exposed.
