I've used the 2206 as a midbass driver, and it's a great part but won't work properly in the π midhorn. You probably can find a JBL 2012 or 2123 in good shape, and those work well. As for compression drivers and horns, I suggest going with JBL 2426 if you want a speaker with all JBL drivers. The 2226/2012/2426 combination is very nice.

The problem with using the large format driver isn't just the fact that the larger driver doesn't have quite the HF extension. Even if that weren't the case, the horns used with them are necessarily different sizes too. The geometry is wrong for the existing crossover, so you would have to redesign. I've gone to great lengths to set the crossover points right so directivity is uniform at the crossover points and the null angles are outside the pattern. That's not a trivial task.
