Might I suggest you post the same question over at Headwize and Head-Fi. Those forums are dedicated headphone enthusiasts.

The lower end Grados are great for rock music and can be had for less than $150. You can even step into used better models pretty reasonably as well. Both the forums above, especially Head-Fi, have a great for sale section.

Sennheisers are really good for jazz, classical, and so forth IMO.

I personally have a set of AKG-240S cans that I like and run about $100.
