The eight π uses the Alpha 10 and PSD2002. The Alpha 10 drives a midhorn and the rear chamber is tuned similarly to the two π tower, so it works sort of like a mini-VOTT. You might like that design. If it is still too large, you could do something like you're talking about with a crossover like what is used in the three π or four π. Personally though, I'd stick with the stock two π or two π tower and use them as they are. The Vifa tweeter is a little smoother and milder, and that works perfectly for surrounds.
