The power levels you'll be running will make a difference. Typically, at normal listening levels, 16 awg would be adequate. But, if you are using inefficient speakers driven by big amplifiers (high current levels), then the larger awg wire would be best.

Subwoofers often consume a lot of current, hence the 12 awg wire.
