I agree with you. I plan on going with the simplest method that works well. If the intercooler isn't needed, then the tests will show that and there's no need to go with the extra complexity.

As for durability, just put the intercooler behind a metal grille and it's protected well. Recess the whole area so it doesn't stick out. The image in the post was just a sort of schematic diagram
