Bill,
Have you damped and destressed the 811B horns? What you described sounds a lot like what motivated me to damp and destress my 511B's. My guess is that Wayne voiced the speakers using a horn that is made from a material that is better damped than the 811B's, and does not have their somewhat shrill sound. If your horns have been damped and destressed, then Waynes suggestion of clip-in circuit segments is a great way to compare alternatives. Also, along the lines that you were thinking about, you could try Jensen paper-in-oil caps.
