There are two things that make up a speaker's motor - the voice coil and the magnet. On older speakers, an electromagnet replaced the magnet to supply a fixed magnetic field, and it worked very well. But the point is that the voice coil is a determiner of motor characteristics - namely, it's strength and its impedance. The magnet also contributes to strength, and the mass that is moved sets the resonant frequency of the motor to a large degree. All of these things are interrelated, and so your selection of the voice coil properties will determine the behavior of your speaker.
