Keith is very knowledgable about modern DAC/ADC and audio applications that use them. Things have changed a lot since the days when DACs were resistor ladders and ADCs were the same thing with successive approximation and comparitors. Because of this, I would suggest you examine various chipsets and codecs in addition to resolution and sampling rate, as the components and codecs chosen will have as much or more impact on sound quality as the resolution and sampling rate does.
