Harry Olson presented the theory of line sources (arrays) in his classic book in 1957. Other references predate his tome. More recent work by researchers from JBL and especially L'Acoustics have significantly improved our understanding of how to apply them. Most of the work has been applied to pro sound applications. Most concerts and fixed venues these days use line arrays.
