I would argue that the issue that those early mini projectors had were the components used and not necessarily about the sizes of those projectors.
I noticed that the manufacturers used weak LED bulbs, inflated throw distance specs, and plastic lenses. Doing so affected the picture quality even in dark spaces.
While I think the size can be a factor ( not necessarily a big one), I am of the opinion that most mini projectors done nowadays are far more better than what we used to get some years ago. The picture quality is better since companies use better LEDS and 1080p chips in making the ones that we have now.
