I think your decision not to depend on monitor speakers was a great one. In most cases, I've noticed that most of those monitor speakers don't give quality sounds, which is why I always go for external speakers for my devices.
There are a couple of options you should check out, like the Logitech Z207 and Creative Pebble Pro.
You can get those two on Amazon for around $60. I would also suggest you check recent reviews about the two accessories before making a final decision on which one you like. Best of luck to you on making a pick.
