What would be some cool shapes for speakers that would not diminish sound quality? I'll have some time on my hands in a few months to tinker around with it, and all I can come up with are circles and octagons.

Well, I've had the opportunity to experiment with building speakers over the years using different shapes. I constructed one in three years ago using a hexagonal plywood material. I think I spent less than 100 bucks making it.
The only mistake that I made was not taking time to smooth the insides, and that affected the sound waves. That's what to watch out for any speaker that you are building.
You can build good speakers in different shapes like smooth cylinders, egg-structured shapes, or even tall tubes. It must not be octagonal or in circular shapes.
When I make mine, I ensure that I measure more than once, especially the internal volume, to avoid repeating the mistake that I did years ago. During building, ensure to test progress with a mic app while treating the room if the need be. Let me know if you need ideas on getting the materials.
