900 dollars for a hifi rack seems steep to me. Particularly if you're DIYing it. I know the butcher cutting boards are very popular with threaded rod vertical supports. Nothing wrong with it. I made my open cabinet out of 3/4 birch veneered ply some years back. I think it only took a 4x8 sheet of it. I included drawers for my most played records. My turntable is wall mounted. Anyway, hope your financial situation opens up from the unexpected slings & arrows of misfortune. And your son is mending well. I know healthcare is one of the main issues with our societies cost of living dilemma. Here's my rig & cabinet.
