It's quite unfortunate you had such an experience. The reality is that getting expensive gear doesn't mean it can match your musical equipment. This has a lot to do with synergy and little about specs.

What I do when buying amps is that I test it before I make purchases, depending on the speaker that I am getting it for. For example, the Focal III Evo that you mentioned is 4 ohm, 92dB sensitivity, and leans bright. This means, talking from experience, that it needs amps that have clean power, control, and a neutral tone to avoid harshness.

So, I think that understanding the type of speaker that you have and its features can always help you in making the right decisions when it comes to getting the amps that match it. It doesn't have to be an expensive amp, but if you find one, that's still fine.
