Measuring the noise can be done in many ways, but the ones that I would suggest you do are these two methods.

The first one is what I call the talk test. You need to talk when you are standing a few metres away from them. If they are unable to hear you easily, then you need to reduce the volume.

The second one is what some have suggested already which is using a phone app like the NIOSH sound level meter.  You measure this by placing the phone mic right against the earbud cup to measure. The aim should be around 75 dB which is ideal for kids. Once you get the measurement right, you won't have anything to worry about anymore.
