Personally, it is about 75% undiluted enjoyment and 25% the joy of getting top-quality audio gear for a fraction of the retail price.
I am always fascinated by the process- going to the workshop, taking measurements, cutting the wood, soldering deep into the night and the special feeling when you power the project for the first time.
There is this pride that I feel when I realise that I know every item that was used in building the Speakers, or the hi-fi rack. It screams "mine"!
The financial part is secondary, but I always count it because I can clearly remember using just $2000 to build the last pair of floor-standing three-way speakers that I currently use in my place. If I had made a purchase, I would have ended up spending close to $6,000 and the funny thing is that it might not have been built to my taste.
So, basically, I build certain devices myself because I enjoy doing it. I like the art of problem-solving, and to be able to execute the plan of constructing a DIY piece is awesome.
