I own two speakers that have both suddenly started to sound crackly and distorted. I've been told that the problem may be the receiver and that replacing it would fix the issue. Is this correct, or could there be a different issue?

Connect the speakers to a different system to know for sure.  If the noise goes away, then the problem was in the receiver or the source.

And then after you fix them, put an old 33 on the turntable to revisit that good, old-fashioned crackly sound.

After all these years, I still know what that sounds like.

Oh, that sounds frustrating! I’m not an expert, but from what I’ve read, crackling and distortion can come from a few things. It could be the receiver, especially if both speakers started acting up at the same time. But it might also be the wiring, loose connections, or even the speaker components themselves. I’d probably check all the cables and connections first, and if those are fine, then look into the receiver. Sometimes just cleaning the contacts can help too.
