I own two speakers that have both suddenly started to sound crackly and distorted. I've been told that the problem may be the receiver and that replacing it would fix the issue. Is this correct, or could there be a different issue?

Connect the speakers to a different system to know for sure.  If the noise goes away, then the problem was in the receiver or the source.

And then after you fix them, put an old 33 on the turntable to revisit that good, old-fashioned crackly sound.
