My anniversary is coming up and I'd like to create some artwork for my wife that shows the sound waves of a song. The sound waves will depict part of the chorus from the first time we danced together at our wedding reception. Which piece of software do you recommend for visualizing this project? I'm either going to etch the sound waves into glass or wood, so I'd love to be able to blow up a printout and use it as a guideline.

Hi I see two ways to do this. First (as you probably figured) you have to get the sound into a PC. I use Windows so if you use some other brand it may be different. If the sample is in digital form (CD, streaming etc) and not analog I would use a program like Audacity to trim it to size. Displaying the result can be done in the same program...but you have all the menus etc on the screen at the same time. In my system I would do a screen capture and clean it up in a graphics program so that all you have left is the strip with the sound display. You could then size it to fit your needs. If the source is analog you will first have to "record" it into the PC to get the digital file. Many programs will do that. I suspect that there might be some software out there that would do exactly what you want but I don't know of any. Anyone out there with some ideas on what seems a very worthy project?

It's a very sweet idea, leot55. You could use something like WavePad or Sonic Visualiser to create your artwork. Or, how do you feel about buying your gift, instead of making it yourself? I ask because Uncommon Goods has a seller that makes custom made song art. Check it out and see if it'll work for you. https://www.uncommongoods.com/product/custom-song-wall-art/531760000002

I'm never opposed to buying something rather than making it myself, but I'm quite miffed that someone else had the same idea. I wanted to giver my wife something unique, and I thought I had an original idea. She is such an amazing woman. She truly is my perfect mate for life. Now I'm not so sure about going with this idea for an anniversary gift.
It's a fabulous gift idea, Leo. I would melt if my husband gave me something like that. You should still go for it. If you want to do something slightly different than what's available commercially, you could use Friture to create a spectrum analyzer of the chorus, then craft something to represent that bit. I think your first idea is wonderful, though.
