I really like big band, jazz and blues and I decided I want to start collecting old vintage vinyl records and have my own little library at home. Any suggestions on where I could get started? Where do you buy your vintage records from?

There are many online retailers of both used and new reissue genres you mention. Discogs is great for used vinyl. Hooking up retailers from all over to sell on it's platform.

https://www.discogs.com/

I used to use ebay, but the bidding war associated with it soured me. Discogs has a price the merchant lists based on the records condition and rarity or marketability. I've had good luck with it.

And the online stores are too numerous to list. I like this one for my reggae cravings, but they have a large list of genres as well. With reasonable prices and excellent service. https://www.millionsofrecords.com/

Then you will probably have many local brick & mortar shops where you live to consider. Get to it, and don't forget to join the Vinyl Engine for all your questions and interests in the vinyl universe.

Oh wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to post all this info. I will definitely be checking it out. I also saw some on eBay, but was not really impressed. Thanks again!

What a great idea! I would start looking at auctions, estate sales or pawn shops. Actually I've seen many records at yard sales and craft shows too. They seem to pop up everywhere! Good luck! What genre will you look for?

Hi, as odd as it sounds (nice pun) you can actually get new and used ones on Amazon. You enter the title or artist and it will come up with what is available. The costs are usually not much over other sources and you have a number of protections if the LP is not as advertized.

Good Listening

That's one of the reasons that I come here, you guys have some great resources. I still swear by shopping at estate sales and garage sales for a bargain. I've scored some fantastic records that way. Plus, finding a treasure is half the fun.

Rusty won the internet with that 3-month-old answer. It still holds up.

Good job, dude.

To me, it just feels right to find the brick and mortars for this one. Finding old-school requires using old school......as the saying goes.

Ordering a jazz record from the 1930's online feels like you're doing something wrong.

Thanks but I'm a heretic in that regard. For most of my obscure material. I've had to use online merchants like Discogs or when I used it Ebay. I got to the point looking locally where I couldn't find what I wanted. As the vinyl resurgence blossomed the availability lessened. So, I have no qualms using the market pulling in sources from all over the place to make the odds more in my favor. One of my biggest hauls though was local. In the mid 90's when a local university went all digital they had a blowout bargain basement sell off of all their vinyl inventory. It was a mad house but I got some great jazz out of it.
I don't mind buying reissues at all. Vintage stuff can command nutty prices. For some, the collecting is a mania. Like the famous underground artist R.Crumb depicts. He's a 78 freak.

R.Crumb, the granddaddy of underground comics from the 60's. Elevated the graphic art of comic strips and books into a social phenomenon with his satire and perverse take on culture and his own life through pen & ink.
As a kid I ate up the early paperback reissues of Mad Magazine. Featuring the inking of Wood, Elder, Davis and Kurtzman.

Now as a fully grown ape. Or grizzled ape, age wise. I've enjoyed the very stylized hyper real and bizarre graphic novel art of Charles Burns.
El Borbah. My favorite 300lb wrestler sans: detective.

And the graphic novel, Black Hole.
