Which one's better for discovering indie music? I found most of my new listening bands through Youtube because Spotify apparently pay bands very little, but now Youtube has slashed its ad revenue is that going to hit bands badly?

To be honest, I don't particularly keep up with the revenue and stuff like that, so I'm not sure how it's going to affect the bands. Though, I can say that I do find most of my indie bands through youtube.

The Youtube ad changes are hitting bands hard. One group I follow said it just lost 98% of its revenue. Looks like metal or other genres off the beaten track are getting hammered by it.

I don't know for sure but it sounds to me like that couldn't have been much of an income anyway. Can a band really survive off ad income from youtube?

Yes, bands used to be able to make a living on Youtube, but this is hitting people across the board. Try WCPW: they went from getting several thousand dollars for over 1 million views to $44 under the new rules. It was a literal over 98% drop, and that's a huge hit for anyone to take.

I think I've found most of my indie music on YouTube, because they always recommend great new artists. However, Spotify is great too and they have some good indie playlists.

I don't listen to indie music but I prefer Spotify over YouTube music. YouTube has so many ads (unless you pay for the non ad version). It's crazy how many times I hit skip ads, it's annoying.

Although I regularly use Spotify more than YouTube, I'd opt for the latter if you want to discover indie works. Uploading content on YouTube is more convenient that anyone can share their work there.
