Despite taking a lot of disk space, the uncompressed formats are said to be the most accurate. Either way, what would be the advantage of going for the WAV format as opposed to MP3 for example?

An mp3 file will never sound as good as a wav file. Some people don't care and only want to save space, so they go with the mp3.

I guess I'm one of those persons who don't care too much about sound quality, although I still enjoy listening to high definition music. There are some mp3 conversions that retain the sound quality with the use of a good set of headphones.

Hi, I hate to be the bearer of bad news.....even the highest resolution MP3 (I have seen 320K) is a lossy conversion. They may sound OK, but side by side with a true high res copy will be deficient. The use of phones vs speakers really has no effect. I do grant that the best MP3s are not too bad, but with storage so cheap why not use the uncompressed files. My portable player, a FIIO X3, can handle 256 gig on a single chip. That is an enormous number of tracks. Many thousands.

Good Listening

Because it's not a smartphone too. I appreciate the sound is better, but I think most people just want that all-in-one device that's always on hand.

I stand corrected. I go with Leot when it comes to mobility so I will just use good quality headphones to supplement the quality of the MP3 music. However, I would go with gofar if the music will be used at a party.
