I've recently attended a concert where the guitarist went near to the speaker and had a sound feedback. The musician was surprised but recovered successfully. The volume was not that loud. So how does sound feedback occur?
The sound could be due to a few reasons, but I bet the guitar pickup and speaker created a positive feedback loop. Moving further away from the amplifying loudspeaker should have helped.

My thoughts exactly! Just wondering, would turning down the gain on the amp and/or guitar help? Might he have adjusted the volume of the speaker and the amp?
