How important is it to measure the level of unwanted noise generated by the system itself? Also, what normally causes inteference from external sources to occur?

Naturally, if external noise is loud enough to be noticeable, it is distracting and annoying. Sources are anything from ground loops or bad connections to equipment that generates strong EMF like motors and unshielded transformers. Digital equipment sometimes makes a grungy sound.

At times, it becomes difficult to trace these sources and so I normally prefer to get an expert to handle all that. Nothing is as distracting as external noise that cannot be controlled.

How do we sound proof a simple music room converted from a bedroom so that external noise won't be a problem when we are recording something?

Well, it is very important to measure unwanted noise generated by the system. I can still remember the one that happened recently to me when I was recording late in the night. I didn't notice that my interface was adding a low hiss, which I got to know during playback. It was pretty annoying when I realised that after the whole time that I spent.

I also think that when we talk of external interference, it can come from WiFi routers, power wires, fluorescent lights, phone chargers, and, in some cases, nearby appliances.

I will say it is necessary to monitor spaces between devices such as your laptop and mic when recording because the noise from the laptop could interfere in the quality of sound that you make. I've always been careful about that.
