Which is better for a home theater setup, a large screen TV or a projector? In the past, projectors were expensive so the TV was the choice of many homes. Today, large screen TV's can be more expensive than projectors, depending on the brand and quality.
I think projectors are good to have with the advancement of technology. I don't know though if the projectors can have the resolution that TV's have today.

My thoughts as well because I am yet to come across a projector that would give a resolution similar to that of a TV. I have always preferred TVs, for this simple reason.

There is one big advantage when using a projector - You can place the center channel speaker behind the screen. That allows a good quality loudspeaker to be used.
Most center channel speakers that are designed to mount below a television are terrible. You really can't make a good loudspeaker that's short and wide. The typical design uses horizontally arrayed drivers, which then create lobes and nulls in the listening area. I'd rather have a phantom center than that.

I guess then that a projector only has the advantage of enabling good sound quality, but not necessarily good picture quality/resolution. What's the best resolution that you can get via a projector?

Let me expound on the issue with the center channel. My expertise is loudspeakers.
You can get great sound without a center channel speaker. When the left and right mains generate relatively constant directivity and they are are setup where their forward axes cross in front of the listening position, they make a fantastic phantom center. This is the holy grail of stereo, and it makes a very good impression of realism even without a center channel speaker.
That said, it's better to also have a center channel speaker if it doesn't require a compromised loudspeaker configuration. That means having a center channel speaker that matches the left/right mains.
If you have the ideal conditions, such as a dark enough room and a good surface to project on to, then getting a projector makes sense. I would rather have a large screen though.
Hello there again Wayne. So what you are saying is that when the speakers on the TV are on the sides instead of under the screen, then the phantom center is achieved for the TV. Is my understanding correct?
