If you are building your own system, does it matter what type of metal...aluminum, etc... you use to build the spine of the cone? Does this part of the speaker play a lot into the final sound?

Yes, the diaphragm material matters. the material and shape affect the frequency and amplitude of cone flex breakup modes.
