I recently watched a Humphrey Bogart film, High Sierra, and the ending got me.
Two friends and an old gold digger go into the West looking to strike out, and soon find a spectacular streak. They set up, and start picking and sluicing away, and realize they have struck a wealth. As they start bringing in more and more gold, they start getting paranoid-get gold fever. They start dividing shares and hiding them; they stare down bandits-then when they have mined it out, bogart dies, having tried to run with all shares; and the other two characters find him, but all the gold has blown away in the wind. It blew right back to the mountain they took it from.
