All:

I am adding a 10" midrange cone speaker to an existing system.

I have a pair of well made JBL two way install cabinets that I have put JBL 2226s and 2450 drivers on 2382A horns in (120 X 40). I also have the option of a pair of JBL 2380As (90 X 40). I crossover at 1200Hz.

I recently purchased a pair of JBL 2012 10" midrange speakers that in intend to place on top of the two-way cabinets and crossover at 300 Hz. Thus 300 Hz and still 1200 HZ.

My question is: should the midrange driver be placed in a closed box to more match the dispersion of the low end ported cabinets or on horns to more match the high end horns?

Thank you for any thoughts,

Bill

You will always benefit from well-made horns provided you have the room and you can provide an appropriate crossover, which accounts for path length differences. Horns provide improved efficiency, lower distortion and more directivity control.
