My friend is looking for an amp, but is trying to spend at least as possible. What should be the minimal price for a decent amp that would not break out on him?

I like the Harman-Kardon receivers, for a budget system. If you want separates that are more high end (but not too expensive), check out Selectronics ProFet amps and preamps. Excellent sound, excellent value. That's what I use at trade shows to demo my speakers, so that tells you how highly I think of the ProFet amps.

I've got the NAD320Bee series amp and 520Bee cdp. Less harsh sounding than some I listened to and plenty of power/headroom. FWIW, mine is a two channel amp, not surround-sound or anything.

Absolutely. I have a NAD preamp, and it is very nice sounding indeed. Clean looking too, functional and lean. Not a bunch of frills, blinky lights and bells and whistles. That's the way I like 'em.

I've got two of the C272's. One for each speaker, both mono bridged.
Very clean, powerful and convincing, plenty of warmth. Of course the front end helps and the Project Turntable seems to be a nice match.
The amps also seem to sound better if left on. they like to be warm to be at their operational optimal. A good buy. If you can afford two of the C272's you won't be disappointed.

I don't know but you can tell your friend that they can check out techforless.com. I'm sure that they will find a couple of amps on there that is worth their money. I seen one on their for about 30 bucks. It was refurbished but still thats a great price.
