It is a single knob control that when turned counterclockwise bass is boosted, treble is cut and when turned clockwise, the situtation is reversed. They are used in the Nad M3, Quad 99, Luxman C12. I think they're cool.

Why not build this:

http://home.eunet.cz/rysanek/cor_sym.gif

and use a dual pot for bass and treble, wired in opposite
ways? That would do what you want.
