We love Spotify, and use it a lot on the desktop computer. But the mobile version is just awful!

Is there a better, maybe a third party app that would work with it?

The answer to this questions depends on why you don't like the mobile version of Spottily. Is it because of the skip policy? If so, I'd try Amazon Music.
