If you live in a part of the country that is dealing with skyrocketing electric bills, how are you dealing with it? More importantly, what do you think is the reason behind it?
This has been an ongoing subject of discussion on the county Facebook page that our county has. I don't know the reason behind the skyrocketing rates, but I know that around here, the electric utility is a monopoly so they can charge what they want, when they want, and all we can do is pay or go without.

Fuel and labor costs are rising rapidly and this in turn will drive up the cost of utilities. Another issue in many parts of the country is the replacement of aging infrastructure. Replacement costs are out of sight. In our area the issue is gas mains. Many are very old and are now starting to go bad. Water systems are in equally poor shape.
iLoveiPod, we have the same thing here. There is only one utility provider for electricity and gas if you live in the city. Many of the people in the countryside around our city have propane tanks instead of purchasing natural gas from the utility company. I don't know about you, but our utility bill for gas/electric runs $150-$250 per month, depending on the season. If we look at our bill, even if we didn't use any electric or gas, it would cost us almost $100 in fees just to be a customer!
