We have a medium-size sanctuary in our church. The pews are between 5 and 100 feet from the platform. The room is wide with 4 aisles and high ceilings. Even when the drummer barely taps the drums they are so loud. Many people like the drums and we don't want to give them up. Is there a way to dampen the sound of the drums or improve the acoustics of the room?
A couple of options here come to mind. You can purchase a drum shield and set it up in front of the drums. If you don't like that idea, you could buy an e-drum set, which allows the drummer to play naturally but you have more control over the volume.

Personally I'd go for the electronic drums, just for aesthetic reasons. However, your drummer may not like the feel of e-drums, so discuss it with him/her first.
Does it sound that way when the pews are empty or full? That will make a difference. Personally, I would go with the drum shield. That's about the most inexpensive option you have.
