Hi Wayne,

Can you (or anyone else) provide direction concerning placement of studio 2pis as surrounds? I'm planning to implement a pair as I expand into 5.1. I'm curious about aiming, height, and distance behind the listening position. I'm sure there is a certain amount of experimentation due but I wanted to see what is recommended or has worked for others in the past. My room is 13x17 with 7pi mains.

Thanks Jeremy

Is there any harm is positioning 2pi surrounds horizontally rather than vertically? One would never do this with mains but I'm not sure if this matters with surrounds... Aiming them toward each other, on opposite walls, about 2 feet behind the listen position, seems to work well in my room.

Don't lay the speakers sideways, because it causes interference patterns in the horizontal plane. You always want the drivers vertically stacked, one above the other, never side-by-side.

I built four 2π surrounds. I placed them on "piles of stuff" while I was contemplating mounting bracket design and had them about 4' off the floor. They sounded great at that height.

Once I got the brackets done with tweeters at about 6' above the floor the sound opened up and improved immensely. Being above ear level works great for surrounds since as you move closer to a speaker you get further off-axis, therefore the volume is attenuated somewhat.

Check out my build thread here for more details.

I agree with you, Pete. Surrounds are more natural sounding if placed a little above the listeners. Mains should be pretty much the same height as the screen, but surrounds should be a little above.
