For anyone looking for fun projects, check into Arduina programmable units. The most fun audio use I've seen is the laser harp in this YouTube video:

For more details, and more ideas, go to the site, MakeUseOf.com and look at their article:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/arduino-technology-explained/
and download their free beginner's manual:
http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/getting-started-with-arduino-a-beginners-guide?utm_campaign=newsletter&utm_source=2012-08-07
I'm not connected to MakeUseOf in any way, but I highly recommend them for almost any technology question.
