We just got an astronomical bill from our local hospital today for a recent ER visit. We don't have insurance so we're pretty much at their mercy. To be completely honest, if we'd have had insurance, I probably wouldn't have given the bill a second glance, but when WE have to pay it, I'm just slack-jaw over how much they're charging for everything!

Go and negotiate with them. Since you're paying cash, they don't have any red tape and may be willing to give you a deal.

Some hospitals also have financial assistance programs that you may qualify for, too. If you inspect your bill closely, there might be a phone number for their financial help department.

Thanks for the input. We're definitely going to look into some financial assistance or cutting some type of deal with them. I just can't believe an ambulance ride cost us a grand and a couple of hours in the ER cost us ANOTHER grand!

It adds up fast. Financial assistence is definitely in order here. All you can do is pay them what you can and they're going to have to accept that.
