I bought a component stereo system recently, or at least I thought I did. When my brother came over recently, he said that I didn't actually have a true "component" setup. Rather, he said I have what's called a "pre-matched" setup. What's the difference?

It's just semantics. You bought a collection of gear, a "home theater in a box", so to speak. It is made of a collection of "components." The quality of each of them is what is important to you, not how they are packaged or sold.
