What is the difference between mp3 and mp4? Is mp4 some kind of more advanced format for music and would you need special equipment to play it?

Mp4s are essentially a media container, so they can contain music, video, and text, while mp3s are restricted to audio. I think Apple products (iPhone, etc) can play mp4s.

Great question and great answer. I have never heard of a mp4 player ever. So it was interesting to me. I have an mp3 player but not an mp4 player.

All smart-phones that play video and music are mp4 players, so is the iPod touch, the iPad, the Zune and all other handheld devices that are made for playing music and video.
