I have attended a party last weekend and there was this guy who was playing with wine glass. There are different sizes of the glasses and they contain a bit of water. I'm amazed about the precision that he did with how much water the glasses should have to create a specific note. Have you seen someone played like this?

I have never seen anyone play a song on wineglasses in person; that must have been so cool to watch! I have seen an online video, but it's not the same as being there.

Ben Franklin made his Glass Harmonica out of glass bowls using the same principle. There's an awesome "band" (t is just one woman, typically) called These Feathers Have Plumes and she uses an array of wine glasses with contact pick ups on the bases and runs them through a series or guitar effects as she plays them. Excellent stuff!

These Feathers Have Plumes is a great project! There are some French artists using wine glasses, too. And Harry Partch wrote some excellent pieces that used the equivalent of wine glasses as well as George Antiel, who wrote for them specifically.

Has anyone tried recording wine glasses? If Andie Brown from TFHP runs them through a mixer using contact pick ups, is that okay for recording them? Perhaps a combination of contact pick ups and overhead or close mics? I guess it depends on the number of channels available, but I suspect using a bunch would be best and sound pretty good!

When I was in band in high school, we performed a piece once where we used crystal glasses. We had to fill them at different levels before we went on stage, it was a bit tricky. The sound was definitely interesting and pretty cool, although I'm not sure how good it sounded in the audience.
