This movie is about orphaned kurdistan refugies, in the refugie camps on the border with Iraq and Turkey. The events take place just days before an American invasion. The charismatic, steet-wise teenager is taking care of orphans by organizing them to collect land mines that will earn them money. This film is almost perfect, and equaly heartbreaking and devastating that will stay with you for long time.

This Japanese anime is a classic: unforgettable in its poignancy and execution. The film takes place after the great destruction of the atomic bomb. It is about the survival of a young boy and his toddler sister. The dvd version contains an interview with the director who survived that time.
To dismiss Grave of the Fireflies as a cartoon would miss the point. Much of the work in animation by the Japanese has to do with the restrictions placed on live action drama by the American Marshall Plan during reconstruction of the country. I'm going to see if I can find out more about Turtles Can Fly as well.
