I was just catching up on this thread... pretty interesting.

No, you won't hear pan pipes and accordions on the same
recordings. There was a folk show here in Wisconsin on the
history and music of polka. The Germans brought the oompah
band to Mexico and the locals picked up on the sound and
incorporated it into their own music. This did not happen
when all the Nazis moved to Brazil.

The multi-part program called "Downhome Dairyland" ran
for a long time. It was put together by Rick March and the
Historical Society of Wisconsin.

I enjoyed all the shows, but I don't dance and so see few live
polka parties here. What I've come to believe is that people
have little respect for and are quite frankly ashamed of their
own culture and tend to focus on what they perceive as being
'cool.'

Since you were talking about Buena Vista Social Club, I'll
add that one of my favorite Latin recordings is called
Jam Miami in which they do a full jazz band treatment of
the "I Love Lucy" theme as sort of a turnabout being fair play
arrangement of the old tv song.

BVSC is one of Wim Wenders worst films: they put the
musicians in the studio and because there was nothing for the
camera to do, they did all this verite crap that makes the
viewer (me) sick to my stomach and could not concentrate
on the music at all. I had to turn it off.

But if you can find a title called "Calle 54" snatch it up.
