I went to a friend's house and their surround side and rear speakers were embedded in the ceiling so they pointed straight down. I didn't get to hear them, but I can't figure how that would sound better than mounted, adjustable speakers that point out and down. What do you think?

Interesting... I haven't heard of speakers in the ceiling pointing down, so I tried to do a bit of research. This link provided some basic info on sound that I found helpful.
