When high-definition televisions started to get popular, I had no idea what the big deal was about. So the screen is a little brighter. Does it really make that much of a difference in movies and television?

It's not just brighter - it's bigger and clearer. The colors are more vivid and it seems more "real". It also gives you more of a feeling of seeing it on the "big screen" in the movie theater.
