A friend of mine is complaining because all her mp3s play at different levels. Do any mp3 players come with compression software to keep things at the same volume?

I believe Ipods have a volume parameter in the MP3's tag that can be set exterally through itunes. I wouldn't recommend compression. Your windows computer uses compression you don't eve know about unless you turn it off, so it is kind of difficult to judge without turning that off.
That is a much better option than messing with the internal gain setting of the file, unless you really know what you are doing.Setting the gain properly (which is much different than the "volume" discussed above) would not solve any volume issue anyway.
