My nephew will be starting band next year, and wants to try trumpet. The school offers a rental program, but craig's list sells trumpets for not much more than the rental price. Is there any advantage to renting through school?

A lot of musicians are fond of their instruments and feel like they are part of themselves. Especially singers. (okay, that wasn't funny)
Buy used and tell the kid it is new. He'll think it is more special that way.
The little differences can mean either complete apathy toward the instrument verses starting a passion that will run deep likely forever.

I would ask how young is your nephew and what is the possibility that he may not like the trumpet? If he is trying his first musical instrument he may decide after a year that he would rather play a trombone. In that case, rental would be a better option since mom or dad wouldn't have to worry about getting rid of a trumpet that would not get used again.

Since your nephew is just starting out with band, there is a 50 50 chance he will either really enjoy it, and it will open up a whole new world for him, or he will put it away when the reality of practice enters the picture. When I was in band, this was the most popular instrument especially among the boys. If you were to buy it from Craig's List, then you would have the option to either sell it or donate to someone that would love the instrument, but couldn't afford it. Either way, you would make someone happy.
