I am having problems with a removable hard drive I have for storing music and pictures. I have 40 gigs that I am wondering if I can use the iPod to transfer the music from the iPod to the laptop. Please advise.

I don't understand your inquiry. Is the 40GB the external hard drive or the internal one? And yes, you can always transfer files from your iPod to your laptop as long as you have the connectors from your iPod to your laptop.
