The tube covers pop right off, so they're not a problem. There's an auxiliary input on the back of the preamp section, so you could plug in a CD player or some other component. The case of the preamp is plastic, so nobody is going to confuse this with a serious piece of audio equipment. The connections are interesting: you plug the left speaker's captive cord into a 120V outlet, connect a dedicated cable from a jack labeled "18V Out" on the left speaker to an "18V In" jack on the preamp, another cable from the "audio out" on the preamp to the left speaker's "audio in", and a third cord that's hard wired to the right speaker to the left speaker's "right speaker" jack. All are color coded. There's even a small remote.
The sound isn't bad at all. Much better than the typical boombox. And the coolest thing is the tubes are lit from below by blue LED's! While this isn't the only audio equipment you would want, at $97 it's a good bargain, especially if it doesn't die after 90 days like so much cheap Chinese equipment. It's a good office system.
